New Orleans isn’t known for its bluegrass scene, but the Tanglers are working to add this form of Americana into the New Orleans music gumbo. The Tanglers began taking shape 2007 out of some informal jam sessions in New Orleans’ Irish Channel. These jams quickly morphed into a trio and eventually into the six-piece band that is regularly gigging today. Now Dylan Williams (mandolin, vocals), Matt Rota (banjo, vocals), Jacob Tanner (dobro), Harry Hardin (fiddle), Craig Alexander (guitar), and Graham Robinson (bass, vocals) have blended their varied backgrounds in bluegrass, folk, rock, jazz, and classical music into a blend they call “Big Easy Bluegrass.” This approach results in a hard-driving mix of originals, traditional bluegrass tunes, and a few classic New Orleans cuts for good measure. You can hear the diversity of their influences on their debut album, Backwards Burner
Over the past decade, their performances at local clubs, bars, festivals (including the famous Abita Opry), and on-the-air performances on WWOZ’s Old Time Country and Bluegrass with Hazel the Delta Rambler and the Kitchen Sink have steadily increased their following, as well as helped build a bluegrass scene in New Orleans.
